- A study finds that Minnesota communities who raised their tobacco purchase age to 21 saw lower rates of tobacco use among eighth and ninth-graders.
- The Navajo Nation Council recently passed the “Air is Life” Act of 2021, a 100 percent commercial tobacco smoke-free policy. The bill prohibits the use of commercial tobacco products in enclosed, indoor workplaces or public places and within 25 feet of any indoor area across the Navajo Nation.
- A study assessing the effect of Puff Bar e-cigarette’s “tobacco-free nicotine” claim on non-tobacco using young adults found that Puff Bar’s claim may increase non-tobacco-using young adults’ intentions of using Puff Bar and reduce harm perceptions and negative expectancy towards using Puff Bar.
- Researchers examining the effects of IQOS health warnings and modified risk claims among young adults found that among young adult smokers, health warnings increased perceived effectiveness at discouraging IQOS use and perceived credibility.
- ASTHO has released a new blog which includes legislative updates on flavored tobacco products and discusses the inequitable distribution of chronic conditions perpetuated by these products.
- A study examined if the Healthy People 2030 goal to reduce current adult cigarette smoking prevalence to five percent by 2030 can be achieved by using state cigarette excise tax increases. The study found that the feasibility of reaching goal would critically depend on the acceleration of progress in tobacco control. Tax increases tailored to the needs of individual states combined with scaled-up non-tax tobacco control policy interventions can help achieve the desired progress.
- A study examining anti-tobacco messaging on youth found that compared to messaging on the long-term consequences of tobacco use, short-term beliefs were more highly associated with anti-smoking and anti-vaping intentions and better predicted non-smoking behavior at follow-up.
- A recently published WHO Global Tobacco Trends Report showed a global drop in tobacco users that is expected to continue to drop from 1.3 billion to 1.27 billion by 2025 with the help of comprehensive tobacco control policies.
- The University of Virginia is launching a new Youth Tobacco Prevention Program to aid in the prevention of tobacco use across the state by collaborating with local partnerships and promoting health campaigns geared towards the cessation of usage of tobacco.
