General Tobacco Control News and Research
- Recent research found that 12-20% of smokers who use menthol cigarettes reported that they would quit using tobacco products entirely if a ban on menthol flavored cigarettes and cigars was enacted.
- Researchers have found that the 2020 ban on fruity flavored e-cigarettes did not result in adults quitting their use of e-cigarettes. Many adults may have even turned to smoking regular cigarettes after the ban was enacted.
- A study found that excessive amounts of time spent watching television as a child may be a risk factor for later smoking and gambling disorders.
- Positive reinforcement may encourage physicians and other health practitioners to increase their referrals to tobacco Quitline resources. Researchers found that there was an increase in referrals after health practitioners received letters acknowledging their previous efforts.
- Researchers have found that menthol cigarette substitutes, like menthol pipe tobacco and cigarette tubes, pose significant risks. Based on these findings it was recommended that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) expand the ban on menthol-flavored cigarettes and cigars to include these products.
- A study found that it may be possible to reduce youth interest in vaping products by changing the packaging to be less appealing. In particular, the study looked at the impact of removing flavor colors and images.
- Big Tobacco’s campaign to improve its image is gaining traction in some spheres and it has dangerous implications for the future of how tobacco is perceived.
