- Tobacco manufacturers are expanding their product offerings of recreational oral tobacco. New products include nicotine lozenges, tablets, gummies and gum.
- Claims that heated tobacco products are less harmful for health than e-cigarettes may be false. Harm reduction claims for these products are based on weak, low-quality evidence.
- Recent research has found that only three of the most popular social media sites clearly prohibit sponsored content that promotes tobacco products. This means that social influencers can post paid advertisements for tobacco products on the sites.
- After being blocked by a campaign funded by the tobacco industry two years ago, California passed a ban on flavored tobacco products.
- Researchers have found that addiction and intensity of use of e-cigarettes is increasing among adolescents.
- Recent research found that 11.3% of middle and high school students report using tobacco products. The most commonly used form of tobacco among this group is e-cigarettes.
- On December 5, 2022, at 1 pm EST, the CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health (OSH) and the Emory Centers for Public Health Training and Technical Assistance are hosting a webinar on underrepresented populations in tobacco control. State health department tobacco control programs will be presenting ways they have partnered with community-based organizations to target hard-to-reach populations.
