General Tobacco Control News and Research
- A recent study by the American Cancer Society found that cumulative economic losses from cigarette smoking was over $891 billion in 2020, or 4.3% of the United States Gross Domestic Product.
- Counter Tools has launched their 11th Annual Photo Contest. This contest showcases what’s happening in the tobacco trail environment across the country. Submissions are being accepted from October 11th – November 7th.
- Researchers find that tobacco product cessation rates have been changing in recent years in the U.S. alongside the changing tobacco product marketplace and regulatory environment and that rates of discontinuing cigarette smoking remain relatively low.
- The University of Michigan has banned the use of all tobacco products on its three campuses. The ban will be effective starting on November 17th.
- The American Lung Association published a report on the tobacco industry’s continued targeting of Black communities, women and youth with menthol products.
- Juul Labs tentatively agreed to pay $438.5 million to settle an investigation by nearly three dozen states over the company’s marketing and sales practices.
